30 Days of Prayer

I have already thanked you for all the prayers surrounding our “40 days of Prayer” for our nation back in September and October leading into the election… I hope you are still praying!  This Sunday I will be introducing to the church another focused effort in prayer that we would like to encourage everyone to be involved with.  Our Elders want us to enter into a concerted period of prayer over the next thirty days as we look towards 2013 and to pray for the direction and focus of our church family going forward.  As you know, we are greatly looking forward to completely paying off our building debt and are confident that we will do so by the end of the year.  With that responsibility behind us, we are aware that the field is wide before us.  There is so much more we hope to be able to do with our resources going forward… and we are expectantly waiting upon the Lord to reveal what those new opportunities will be.  Our Elders will be presenting to us some thoughts and challenges on Sunday, December 30 as we look towards a vision and plan for 2013 and for the years to follow.  However, before they do, they would like to ask all of us to be in prayer for this direction and purpose.  Our mission is clear, we believe.  We are to reach the lost and to make disciples.  But where?  How?  What tools should we invest in now to help us fulfill that mission… the “Great Commission”?  What is the best way to go about this?  Many ideas and possibilities have been suggested.  There are many ideas.  But we want to seek God and have Him lead us.  So, let me invite you to be in prayer over this and for the many works with which we are involved here at Washington Street.  I am convinced that God is more than able to take a small group of followers who worship here on this corner in Fayetteville, TN and use us to accomplish great things in His kingdom… greater things than we can even hope or imagine!

So, I’ll talk more about this on Sunday… but in the meantime be in prayer over this endeavor as well as the efforts which will go into searching for a new Youth Minister to work with our young people.  These things are very important for us as we close the book on one chapter and turn the page to something new and wonderful that God has in store for us!  Please join us in this journey.

How should a Christian respond to last week's election?

All over the country last Tuesday folks were gathered around their television sets, some were at ball games with radio earbuds and others were at election parties listening as the results started coming in.  As the night progressed some were elated.  Others were disappointed.  I was left to wonder… “Just how should a faith-minded Christian view this election and elections in general?”

Well, I was reminded that this world is ultimately not my home and that while I care deeply about the events and the happenings of the world around me, my actual citizenship is in heaven.  I love my country and am appreciative of those who have sacrificed life and limb for it, but ultimately my home is in heaven.  That gives me a great deal of peace and comfort in the face of all current events.

I was also reminded that regardless of who our nation selected to be our leader or which party is left in charge, whether the elephant or the donkey, my hopes ultimately rest with the lamb.  As a citizen of heaven, my Lord is Jesus and my allegiance is to him and to him alone.  Oh, there are leaders here that I prefer over other ones and I am appreciative that I was able to express that in the voting booth on Election Day, but I knew that regardless of who won… Jesus was still going to be Lord and he wouldn’t be up for re-election any time soon!  He has seen countless leaders come and go… and he has remained on his throne throughout.

And finally, I was reminded of the words of Paul to Timothy as he told his young friend to pray for his leaders.
1 Tim 2:1-5
2:1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone- 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. NIV

Imagine hearing those words and knowing that the “kings and all those in authority” that Paul had in mind included Caesar, who thought himself to be a god, and the officials of an oppressive empire which certainly didn’t acknowledge God as sovereign.  Regardless of who they are or what we think of them, Christians are to pray for our leaders.  On this, we must surely agree!

Good News!

Church family,
It's not everyday that a scary and potentially tragic story ends in such an incredible and amazing way!  According to the Elk Valley Times, sometime yesterday Tyler Campbell, the nineteen year old missing since Saturday evening, was found alive and well near Ardmore, TN.  After totaling his truck he was eventually able to dig out, and climb out of the ravine towards safety and rescue after almost three days.  He is now recovering at Huntsville Hospital.  Prayers have been answered!

Our "Forty Days of Prayer" officially came to an end with yesterday's election.  I want to thank you for each moment you spent with our Heavenly Father bringing before him petitions for our nation, our leaders and the election.  Someone asked me yesterday if this meant we can stop praying now.  She was being fascetious, of course!  And the answer, obviously is absolutely not!  Praying for our country and its leaders is the responsibility of every Christian.  It ought to be something we do constantly... all the time... regardless of who is in the White House or which party is in control.  Christians pray.  It is what we do.  We can make our voices heard by participating in the political process (as most of you probably did this week.)  We can campaign and we can encourage... but there is nothing more powerful and more meaningful we can do than to pray!

It is my hope that if you were not already in the habit of it, this reminder to pray for our country each of the last forty days has created in you a habit... a good habit.  And that you will continue this practice forward.  Our President faces difficult challenges.  He needs prayer.  Our local governments face challenges as well.  They need our prayers, too.  Our country will face many issues in the days ahead.  Pray.  The church, too.  Christians are losing our voice in our world, partly because of our compromise with the world in many respects.  Pray that the kingdom would grow and be blessed... God's kingdom.  That ultimately is the government (i.e. kingdom) which is our first concern.

God bless,
Jim

Tragic news... Prayers outpouring

Church family,
Our hearts are broken this morning to let you know of the tragic passing of Auburn Jennings, the nineteen-yr old son of Lisa & Todd Cobern. He died early this morning in an automobile accident.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time, but I know that their family covets your prayers. You'll remember that Todd lost his son, Brandon, earlier this year.
Our thoughts & prayers are with them all.

Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, Inc., is ready to respond to Hurricane Sandy, once we can determine where the damage is, and know that we can get trucks in. We have truckloads of supplies ready to be loaded and on their way. We are tracking the updates, and once the storm gets through an area, and we can determine where we’re needed the most, we will be looking for local congregations ready to get to work, that have a dry place to store supplies until they can be distributed to the victims. Lets all pray that the storm is nothing like it is being made out to be through the media, and that the Northeast is safe. If Church leaders need to get in touch with us, even before or after the storm, our toll free number is 1-888-541-2848.

Any donations made to the church office will be forwarded to Disaster Relief...

Sunday Night Singing!

Old-Fashioned Singing… THIS Sunday Night!

We are kicking off our Share Group “break” for the months of November & December in style this Sunday night… with an old-fashioned Sunday night singing!  Everyone is invited to come and lift up your voices in praise to the Lord, to praise Him in song and to sing of his wonderful works.  What a great season of Share Groups we have had and what a wonderful way to kick off our break than to come together as a congregation in praise on Sunday night.  Invite your friends and plan for a great night together.

We have several great Sunday evenings planned over the next couple of months and I encourage all to participate.  With our groups finished for the year, if you haven’t participated in a group or in the Sunday night assembly in a while, now is a great time to come back and join in!  On Sunday night, November 18, Bro. William Coffey will be a special guest speaker and the Mayberry Street congregation our special guests.  Afterwards, we’ll enjoy an evening of desserts & finger foods together.  One Sunday evening, the young men from our Youth Group will lead us.  I hope you’ll make Sunday nights a priority for you and your family over these next few weeks.

Tennessee Children’s Home Coin Drive

The Tennessee Children’s Home was ecstatic to receive the outpouring of food and goods that were donated by this congregation for their annual food drive over the last couple of weeks and they wish to express their thanks to all who made their generous donations!  As an ongoing way to help and contribute to the work of the Children’s Home, we have placed “change boxes” in each of the classrooms and around the building.  I want to encourage you to drop your spare change into one of these boxes on a regular basis which will go directly to that wonderful ministry.  I especially encourage our young people to bring their loose change with them to Bible class.

Fall Festival

I want to thank all those who helped plan a wonderful Sunday evening last night out at the Kilpatrick farm for our Fall Festival.  It was a bit “chilly” but the food was warm and the fellowship was even warmer!  Thanks to Joel for the games for the children… to the Share Groups for the preparing the food… to all those who participated in the hay ride and especially to Keith and to Janie Kilpatrick for being outstanding hosts for a wonderful night of fun and fellowship!  I know everyone enjoyed it.

We also want to encourage all of our young people to finish with their “trick-or-treating” fun early on Wednesday night and join us for a night of fun and Bible classes on Wednesday evening.  Our classes will continue as usual and we welcome you to wear your costume and invite your friends to be with you for Bible class.

Washington Street gets a new Web Site!

A New Home on the World Wide Web… www.wscoc.net

Our new web site is going live THIS WEEK and can be found at www.wscoc.net.  Check it out!  On our new site you’ll find all of the old features that have been great resources and tools for years plus several additional features that we hope will make communication much easier for the whole church family.  You’ll continue to find weekly bulletins and sermons posted quickly as well as news and updates on upcoming activities.  Our old “E-News” has become the “Church blog” and will contain articles of upcoming events, happenings, as well as notifications of new bulletin postings.  Members can register with the blog and make comments and/or additions to the posts as well.  You can also subscribe to it, as with the old E-News, and receive notifications any time new postings are made.

Added features include a new Church Calendar which will become the hub for postings of all church activities.  You’ll be able to look at a glance at all the upcoming activities for the Teens, for groups, and for church-wide events.  You’ll not only find information on the events, but you’ll also be able to RSVP (for events requiring it) AND even send out invitations to your friends to the event.  You can also subscribe to the Calendar and receive automatic reminders of events that are coming up.  You’ll be able to send reservation requests as well.  Another new feature is the “Give Online” feature.  For those who wish to, you will have the capability of making contributions or online payments for events (such as youth activities) via a Pay-pal account.  If you don’t have a Pay-pal account, you can sign up for one free of charge.  This is simply another tool some may find useful.

An e-mail will go out to members in our e-mail database which will include a member name and password with instructions on how to access our members section.  It will be a password-protected location that we may post information we only wish members to have access to, such as our membership database of names, addresses & e-mails.

Check out the new page.  Play around with it and let us know what you think.  The site will continue to grow in the coming weeks.

Washington Street T-Shirts
Orders for T-shirts with a new Washington Street Church of Christ design will be taken beginning this Wednesday night during Bible classes.  We hope to place the first order by Oct. 25th, so get yours in now!  Prices & more information will be available then.  If you have any questions or would like more information, you may contact Christi O’Neal or Tammy Mullins.  I appreciate these ladies for taking the initiative on this.  What a great way for us to express our support for the ongoing work here at Washington Street… by proudly sporting a T-Shirt around town.

Next Sunday we will begin a new series, “What did Jesus say about…?” by addressing the question, “What did Jesus say about POLITICS?”  Join us!

Wonderful Celebration Last Sunday
What a wonderful day we had this past Sunday!  We came so very close to meeting our goal of $20,000 in special giving and I expect that some more will come in before all is said and done with this special “5th Sunday” special offering.  Thank you so very much for all of your generosity… not just in the giving towards the building fund, but also in the contribution of so many Magi boxes AND food items for the TN Children’s Home.  Those food items can be brought to the church office until Oct. 16th.  The Magi boxes were packed up today and delivered to Healing Hands for shipment to Honduras.  Thank you!  A total of 172 boxes were collected from students at RCA (which included many of our own children) and 49 were given here at Washington Street.  What a wonderful blessing to so many children.

Please join me in "40 Days of Prayer" for the USA.  Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the last two years, you know that November 6th is election day in our country.  It is indeed a tremendous blessing that we are afforded an opportunity not only to have a say in our country, but to directly affect the government and laws of our land.  Every election is an important one and this one is no different.  Many different things are on the ballot this year, some which will have profound implications for the direction of our nation.  Let me ask that in the coming 40 days, whatever your party affiliation, whatever your personality preferences and whatever your political ideology, please spend time EACH DAY in praying for our political leaders, their families, their decisions and for our nation.

An exciting Sunday coming up!

Special "5th Sunday" next Sunday… Fellowship & Special Offering
A special thanks to Darryl Willis for being with us last Sunday and for bringing a wonderful message and talking with us about his work with Eastern European Missions!  Just as he was visiting with old friends here at Washington Street, Celeste and I (and the family) used the occasion to visit with friends and family in Chattanooga.  While it was good to be away and renew old friendships, it is also good to be back and I am very much looking forward to a terrific Sunday here at Washington Street next Sunday!  It is the fourth of our "fifth Sundays" this year which means we will be having a special offering to towards our building debt.  It is currently below $50,000 and it is very much within reach to completely pay off our building debt by the end of the year!  Praise God for that!  Again we want to challenge the church to give upwards of $20,000 in special giving this week.  I know we can do it and I am SO looking forward to our fifth Sunday in December and getting this loan paid off once and for all.  Please join me this week in considering how you might give "over and above".
Also, this next Sunday we will be receiving our Magi boxes!  I've challenged our young people to be putting together these gift boxes to be sent to Honduras and to bring them to church on Sunday.  I want to make a big stack on the pulpit area with all of the boxes we receive.  Carlos and Marla have requested about 140 boxes this year, so we know that whatever we can provide will go to great use in the kingdom!  This is often the only Christmas gift some of these precious children will receive, so make your box a good one.  Again, small toys, t-shirts, toiletries, school supplies and candy are all great items to include.  The children went home with brochures with all of the information a couple of weeks ago, or they can be found online at www.hhi.org.  Just click on "Magi Project" for a video and all of the details.
Pot-Luck Fellowship
Also, don't forget to stay and enjoy a great pot-luck fellowship meal after our combined adult Bible Class in the Fellowship hall to celebrate another great "fifth Sunday."  Bring something to share with the rest and plan to have a great meal together.
-Jim

Monday, September 17, 2012

Good Monday,

Special Guest Speaker This Sunday, Darryl Willis
Darryl Willis will be with us on Sunday to bring a message and to speak to us about his work with Eastern European Missions.  Darryl served as our youth minister for a number of years and we look forward to every opportunity for him to come back and visit with us.  For the last year he has been working with EEM and has many great stories of God at work to share.  We invite all of the adult Bible classes to stay in the auditorium during the class hour to hear his special presentation.

Don’t forget about Sunday, Sept. 30, the fourth “fifth Sunday” of the year!
We’ll have a special schedule that day as well with a combined adult Bible class in the auditorium followed by a congregational pot-luck fellowship.  There will be no Share Group meetings or evening assembly that night.

Magi Boxes
I challenged our young people on Sunday to begin putting together their Magi boxes this year!  Our missionary family in Honduras, Carlos and Marla, have requested 140 boxes for their outreach program this Christmas and we’ve been challenged to rise to the meet that need!  Our brothers and sisters at the Gallatin church have volunteered to put together seventy and I know we can do the same!  You can check the website at www.hhi.org to download a brochure with the specific instructions, but basically what we need is this:  Each box should be filled full with special gift items (small toys, t-shirts, toiletries, stationary, school supplies, candy, etc.) wrapped (with the lid wrapped separately), labeled appropriately (nino or nina!) and brought back to the church with a rubber band around it and $7 inside of it (for shipping.)  If individuals would like to help us with shipping, you may just donate towards that cost as well.  On Sunday, Sept. 30th, we’ll have a grand presentation of the boxes as I will invite each of our young people to bring them to the front of the auditorium, ready for delivery!

There are a number of other opportunities to serve right now including…
  • The TN Children’s Home is conducting their annual Fall Food drive.  Their truck will be here on Oct. 16th to pickup any donations.  Please bring items by the church office on or before that date.  They would also appreciate any monetary donations.
  • Our own food pantry is in desperate need of re-stocking!  If you could help us with this, it would also be much appreciated.  We like to have a ready supply of canned goods, pastas, boxed foods, etc.  Remember to check the date on any items you donate!  We can’t give away anything that is out-of-date.
  • Sign-up in your Bible classes or Share Groups for a spot on a Wednesday Night Meal Team!  Our deacons are in the process of re-assigning duties and hoping to have enough volunteers commit to this ministry to restart it very soon.  If you haven’t signed up, see one of our Elders or deacons for more info or to get your name on the list!  This ministry is a great opportunity to encourage our families on Wednesday nights to participate in our Bible study time each week.

A little survey from your friendly minister...

Group...
Since you are on my list as one who receives our bulletin electronically each week, I have a question for you.  What would you like to see on our church's web site?  We are currently in the process of redesigning it so that it will be easier to navigate, easier to use and (very importantly for those of us in the office) easier to update!

So, what sorts of improvements and/or features would you like to see?  Be kind to the keepers of the existing site, since that is me

Thanks!

Update from Richard Waggoner

Hi Jim
The work Lisa and I came to do is going good We have treated several sick people and I have visited about 80 0f the 120 orphans in this area AS WELL AS THE FOUR SCHOOLS in this area that we have started for the orphans. At one of the orphan care sites, where a 90 year woman is caring for four and has been for 6 years, she has a home made out of Home made brick her husband built many years and it sits on a little hill. When we parked at the bottom of the hill to walk up to her house about fifty yards, she saw me get out of the rover and she got up from the home made stool and she began clapping and shouting, "my friend from USA has come to see us" She was making so much noise the ophans came to her from every direction. Twice in the last six years I have found very sick and gave he medicine to get her well. the local director gives me a report on her rvery two weeks as he checks ALL widow's and orphan's health. Each morning I teach 35 young men the Biblical approach to conflict Prevention and resolution, and evangelism house to house. it is winter here and the temperatue last night was 44 degrees. but most days it gets up to 80 degrees We hope things ae going well for you and tghe people at Washington Street.and particularly those who are partners with us in the work here. FW: Health Fair at RCA this Friday

Our Health Fair will be held Friday in the gym. Please accept our invitation to view the health projects our middle and high school students have been working on to display. We  have some participants from our local health community that will be here. Also, our elementary students have been working on posters to display. You are invited to attend 9:00-2:30. We WILL break for lunch from 12:00-1:00.

FOR THE STUDENTS: For all parents interested- Dr. Sean Wallis will be performing scoliosis screenings during the health fair on students. If you are interested, the consent slips are going home with students today or tomorrow. The student MUST HAVE a consent slip in order to be screened. If you are interested, complete and sign the slip and return to school/office by Thursday. The procedure for screening is a simple examination of the child's back while standing and also bending forward. You will be notified if your child has symptoms that could indicate a curvature.

FOR PARENTS:  Lincoln County Health System will be here Friday to check blood pressures and oxygen saturation levels. They will also do a lipid panel (cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL (good cholesterol), and LDL (bad cholesterol)- for a charge of $10.00. This will require fasting (nothing to eat or drink after midnight prior to lab). Having the above routinely checked can help with the prevention of heart disease.

Look forward to seeing you there!! Email me with any questions you may have.

Prayer Request... Cody Thurman

Church Family,
I'm only this evening getting to my computer, but I'd like to forward a prayer request sent to us from RCA this afternoon. -Jim Thank you for all of your prayers during this difficult time. I'm sure most of you have heard that Cody Thurman, a sophmore at RCA, was med-flighted to Vanderbilt Wednesday night for treatment of a gunshot wound. While we do not know all of the specific details at this time, we are asking that you all continue to lift the Thurmans up in prayer. "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1
