Services for sis. Barbara Mason

We extend our sympathy to the family of our sister, Barbara Mason, who passed away on Monday evening.  Two daughters, Laurie Lowrance and Lisa Coburn are both members at Washington Street and our hearts go out to them and their families at this time.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 1pm at Lebanon Cemetery.  Visitation will be Wed evening from 5-8pm at Higgins.

We extend our sympathy to the family of our brother, Howard Gaines who passed away early this morning in Nashville.

Bill Hunter and Jim Black are honored to officiate.

Howard was a long-time and dedicated member at Washington Street.  He served as a deacon for many years and was such an encouragement to so many!  He and Sue, his wife of 66 years, are a treasure to all who know them and he will be missed.

Sis. Reba Collins passes

We made aware late yesterday of the passing of sister Reba Collins at Bailey Manor on Sunday.  Our sympathy is extended to her family.  There are no services planned at this time.

Sister Lucille Raby passes

Our sympathy is extended to the family of sister Lucille Raby who passed away late yesterday. A graveside service will be held at Rose Hill cemetery on Saturday at 11:00am with bro. Ricky Pierce officiating. There will be no visitation prior.

An important message from our minister

In light of the recent ruling of the Supreme Court and the questions which this raises for those of us of faith, I have gathered a few thoughts from my perspective as your minister.  I'd encourage you to respond by flooding the gates of heaven with prayer... not only prayer as it relates to our nation but most importantly as it relates to the opportunities for our Christian lights to shine in this moment.

Tom Young passes

It is with regret this morning that we pass along the news of the passing of brother Tom Young.  He slipped away early this morning.

Our prayers are with his dear family at this time, Pat, Drew, Christan and their respective families.  Funeral Arrangements will be made this afternoon at Higgins FH and will be announced just a bit later.

We extend our sympathy to Christy Smith & family on the passing of her mother, Mrs. Jayne Smith.  Visitation will be Saturday 5-8pm at the Moore-Courtner Funeral Home in Winchester.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 1:30pm at the Family Cemetery in Elora

Our prayers are with Christy, Knox, Trent, Miranda and their family at this time.

Joan Maddox and Florence Moore home with the Lord

Two dear Christian sisters have gone home to be with the Lord.  Over the last weekend we learned of the passing of long time members and sisters-in-Christ, Joan Maddox and Florence Moore.

Services for Mrs. Moore will be Tuesday at 3pm a (Higgins Funeral Home) with visitation from 2 until the time of service.

Services for Mrs. Maddox will be announced by Higgins soon.

"The Story" to begin... March 1s

The Story begins… March 1^st

I am also very much looking forward to beginning “The Story” with you on Sunday, March 1^st.  That will be the starting point of our effort to read through the Bible using “The Story” as our guide for the next many weeks.  Many may already have a copy, but if you would like to purchase one there will be a limited number available beginning Sunday at the Welcome Centers (in the lobby & 2^nd floor class hallway).  The cost is $5 per book and it is available in both the New International Version and the King James Version.  When our supplies run out, we may make another bulk order OR you can purchase online.  Links are available from our web site at www.wscoc.net.  Parents and Teens may also find versions of “The Story” available for teens and for small children.  You’ll want to go ahead and secure your copy so we can begin reading it together on March 1^st!

Waking a Sleeping Giant

The church needs a wake up call.  That is not just my opinion but the conclusion drawn from mountains of research and empirical evidence over the course of years from just about every denomination.  The world, it seems, continues to move farther and farther away from God and His desire for His creation.  Our country, the greatest country in the world, founded upon principles of freedom and individual liberty given by God continues to move farther and farther away from the moral foundations laid out in His Word.  The church has seen decline… a steady decline for more than thirty years.  Despite greater efforts at youth ministry and stronger priorities being placed upon teaching our children, young people continue to leave the church… and every indication is that they are not coming back.  Worse… the church is asleep!  Like Eutychus who fell asleep while the apostle Paul was preaching (Acts 20:9) the church is “asleep in the window” and on the verge of teetering out.

I am not one of those “prophets of doom and gloom” always talking about the end of the church or the demise of the Christian era like some.  Rather, I prefer to think God has more up his sleeve and a plan to restore, refresh and revive His people!  Yet, I would be remiss if I did not heed the warnings of Scripture (i.e. Revelation 3) and the insight of history and take up the call for a new awakening of God’s people in our time to rise, see what is happening and to invite God once more to “turn the world upside down!” (Acts 17:6)

That is what “Waking Eutychus” is about… not just another sermon series… but a call for our congregation- our small expression of the Lord’s church which meets at the corner of Washington Street and Franklin- to wake up and invite God to use us in a mighty way to bring our “village” of Fayetteville to a greater knowledge of the Lord.  Who knows but that we might have the same impact as that Samaritan woman Jesus met at a well in John chapter four… who went home to her village and told people about Jesus and the result was “many” came to faith?  Could God do that again?  Could he bring 3,000 to Him in a day like he did in Acts 2?  Join us Sunday as we seek for ways that we can put ourselves in the position to be used by God in those ways… as we seek to wake up and to be about the business of the Lord.  Eternity really does depend upon it.

In an effort to continue to meet the needs of the families we serve as well as the needs of the community, Higgins Funeral Home will offer a complimentary Grief Recovery program to provide a safe and caring environment that fosters encouragement, education, and healing for those affected by the loss of a loved one. The group will also benefit from mutual support and compassionate fellowship between individuals who have experienced similar heart

ache as a result of their loss. 

Grief Recovery is open to anyone in our community who has suffered a loss," says Clay Higgins of Higgins Funeral Home. "After the loss of a loved one, we experience a wide variety of feelings and emotions. The ever-changing emotions we experience with grief can catch us off guard," added Hope DeJarnatt, Aftercare Specialist, "We all need a support system to help us as we move through our grief journey."

Courtney Hanks, who will be facilitating "Grief Recovery" as a Licensed Graduate Social Worker, has been serving the community through counseling for approximately five years. She received her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and her master's degree in social work from Alabama A&M University. Her passion is working with families and helping them through difficult seasons in their lives. She specializes in grief, trauma, and family dynamics, and uses therapies such as trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy, and emotion focused therapy to assist individuals during their time of need. 

Classes will meet beginning Thursday, January 22 at 6 p.m. in the conference room of the Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce office located at 208 Elk Avenue South. If you would like additional information please call Jayson Davis or Hope DeJarnatt at Higgins Funeral Home (931-433-2544).
