December... a "flurry" of activity!

December Arrives with a Flurry of Activity!

There’s lots going on this month… and lots of opportunities to minister to others!

“Bags of Blessings”
This Sunday, December 7th, we will be distributing grocery lists to anyone wishing to take part in a holiday tradition of blessing families in need for the Holidays.  We ask that you take a list, carry it with you to the grocery store and purchase the items on the list.  Then return them in a paper grocery bag by the following Sunday (Dec. 14).  Volunteers are needed to them that Monday (prior to the week of Christmas) to families in and around our community who are in need.  Families are identified primarily through our ongoing Outreach Ministry as well as from recommendations from members and local agencies.  This year a “Red” grocery bag will be paired with a “Green” grocery bag, each full of different items… a $10 gift certificate from Geralds and a letter from the church will be added… and together it will constitute a grand holiday meal for a great family.  You can help by filling a grocery bag, by donating to the purchase of gift certificates (which we often use throughout the year) or by helping us make delivery the following week (more info to come on that!)  And once again, thank you for making someone’s Christmas dinner a bit brighter!

On Tuesday evening, December 16th, we will be assisting Hands of Mercy deliver dozens of hot holiday meals to other families in our community from our church building.  Volunteers are needed for that evening as well.  Time TBA.

“Celebration of the Christ”  Service… Sunday night, December 14th at Howell Hill at 5:00 pm
Our Sunday evening service on the 14th will be moved to the Howell Hill Church of Christ.  It is an annual tradition of prayer, praise and devotional readings of Scriptures as we celebrate the miraculous and marvelous work of Jesus.   The service begins at 5pm (our regular time).  Again, transportation will be arranged.  The bus and/or vans will plan to leave from our parking lot at Washington Street no later than 4:30pm allowing plenty of time for us to travel to Howell Hill.  Last year we hosted the event at our building, so let me encourage all who can to support our brethren there by participating at their building.  What a wonderful time of celebration, prayer and fellowship we will have!

Don’t’ Miss these events in December…
Senior Breakfast… This Saturday, December 6th at 9am
Christmas Caroling… this Sunday, December 7th   2-4:30pm
Ladies’ Ornament Swap…. Monday, December 8th at 6:30pm at the home of Nancy Dodson

Children’s Christmas Party… December 13th from 5-7pm for children ages birth thru 5th grade & their families.  Each family is asked to bring $5 to help with our service project honoring local firefighters & police who serve our community.

Rethinking Church

I have always been fascinated studying church history by that part of our past known as the Restoration Movement.  In the early part of the 19th century when the nation was still young a number of frontier evangelists from various religious backgrounds begin having the same sort of misgivings about the “religious establishment.”  Something of a revival was taking place on the frontier and it was a time of religious fervor for many.  Men like Thomas Campbell- a Presbyterian, Elias Smith- a Baptist, and James O’Kelly-  a Methodist, began questioning their church traditions and practices.  They began “rethiking church.”  Shortly Campbell’s son, Alexander and a fiery Presbyterian preacher from the frontier, Barton W. Stone began reminding everyone of the “oneness” of the church and sent out a call towards Christian unity that prompted many churches to drop their denominational ‘names’… and come together as “Christians, and Christians only.”  It was a time of great upheavel for many.  Many had to let go of long-held traditions and practices in order to recover the Biblical faith of the early church.  What is it with mankind that we have a tendency towards forming traditions outside of Biblical authority and a propensity to legislate commands where God has not?

Today as we look out over the religious landscape of 21st century America, I wonder if it is time once again for a new “restoration movement”… a new effort of to recover the authentic, simple and Biblical faith of the early church.  Is there a need to “Rethink Church” today?  I believe so!  While much has been done to recover the structures and the practices of the early church… it seems there is still much work to be done.  There is way too little effort towards striving for Christian unity today.  There are few congregations who model the giving and sharing together that characterized the early church.  And Mission?  Mission work has been delegated to the professional “missionaries” instead of being a responsibility of the whole body of Christ!  Indeed, it falls to every generation to “rethink church”… to go back to the Bible and ask the hard questions.  “Are we being faithful to the call of God in our generation?”  “Are we about the mission of God in this community as He would have us to be?”  “What ARE our purposes and why ARE we here?”

These are all good questions and I hope you’ll be with us each Sunday for the next several weeks as we “Rethink Church” together.
