The Mission Question... part 3

Two weeks ago I mentioned a business article I read which identified four questions that every business must ask… four “mission questions” that are even better than having a “mission statement” because they help an organization clarify or define their mission.  I believe it’s important for churches, too, to ask these same question as we seek to clarify our mission.  #1  Why are we here in the first place?   And #2 what does the world need most that we are most uniquely able to provide?  The third is the challenging question for us…

#3  What are we willing to sacrifice?

Every business faces tough choices.  Churches, too.  When it comes to defining our mission, we must ask this all-important question, “What are we willing to do to be successful?”  If our mission is to take the gospel into our community and our world to make disciples (cf. Matt. 28) then what are we willing to sacrifice in order to put the time, money and energies into making that happen?  It’s a good question, isn’t it?  Would we be willing to sacrifice money?  What percentage of our budget would we be willing to dedicate to mission and outreach?  I want to thank everyone for an outstanding special contribution last month dedicated to just this, local outreach.  Over $7,000 was given specifically for this.  That is awesome!  That is $7,000 that could have been used elsewhere… on our facility, on church-fellowships or any number of ways.  Yet, we chose to sacrifice that for local outreach.  That may be the easiest thing to sacrifice, however.

What about time?  If you’re like me, time is the most precious commodity you’ve got.  Everybody has a limited amount of it and some of the biggest decisions we make in life is how to spend it.  Would we be willing to sacrifice our time towards teaching the lost, towards feeding the hungry, towards building relationships that matter with people who need to know the Lord?  For me, time spent in these areas means time away from doing other things… other things like ballgames or family outings; time working in the yard or catching up on things at home; time preparing for a lesson or time or time just relaxing.  What time are you willing to sacrifice to be about the mission of the church?  I am so grateful for our deacons.  Many of them spend untold amounts of time away from these things and from other things they enjoy doing to be about the work of the church.  They are the ones who make things happen and for that I am so grateful!  On Saturday, November 2nd Hands of Mercy is holding a Fall Mobile Food Pantry for families in need in the community.  Once again it will be held at the Fairgrounds and once again they are in need of volunteers.  If you would be willing to sacrifice some of your time and energy on that Saturday morning, they will begin at 10am sorting and unloading the truck.  It is a great opportunity to be a blessing to our community… but it will require sacrifice.  Are you willing to sacrifice for the mission?

What's our "mission question"? #2

Last week I mentioned a business article that I read recently which made this statement… “Forget the mission statement, what’s our mission question?”  The author had interviewed CEOs of some of the country’s most successful businesses and said that asking the right questions is the key to having a successful business.  I wondered if that also applies to church.  The first question successful organizations must ask is, “Why are we here in the first place?”  I believe it is absolutely essential that a church always remember its primary reason for being.  We are the blood bought family of God paid for by Jesus Christ Himself and it is He who gave us the great commission to go into all the world and preach the good news.  What better reason is there than that?  The second question is one that we ought to quickly be able to answer as well.

#2  What does the world need most that we are uniquely able to provide?

Panera bread looked at the statistics regarding poverty and hunger and decided that they were in the unique position of being able to donate large quantities of fresh bread to people all over the world.  According to some statistics, they give away in excess of $100 million worth of food a year.  Further, they also determined that they were in the unique position of being able to provide more complete and dignified eating experiences for those in need.  So, they opened a “Panera Cares Café” which are essentially eat-for-free restaurants with the costs being covered from donations by customers and other benefactors.  What an interesting idea.

Church, what does the world need most that we are uniquely able to provide?  The Bible is plain, “All have sinned and fallen short the glory of God.” (Rom. 3:23) and “The wages of [this] sin is death…” (Rom. 6:23).  So, the need… in fact the greatest need of anyone and everyone in the world is for salvation!  And we know the rest of that verse!  Romans 6:23 goes on to reveal… “BUT, the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Who is in a better position to take that good news message of Jesus to a lost and dying world than we are?  We have given our lives to this Jesus.  We gather each Lord’s day to worship and praise Him.  We read our Bibles and we grow in Him.  We pray and earnestly seek after Him with our own lives.  We KNOW the joys of salvation!  We KNOW what it is to fear the Lord!  Aren’t WE in the perfect position to take this gospel we hold dear to a lost and dying world?  Of course we are!

What will it take?  When will the church become as committed to reaching the lost as it is to pleasing the saved?  When will its focus turn from satisfying its own needs to meeting the needs of those outside of Christ?  Perhaps there is something to be learned from Panera bread on this?  There is much need in our world.  What can we do to help?

Next week… question #3 we must ask ourselves.

Forget the Mission Statement... What's our Mission Question? (part 1)

Fifteen or more years ago the leadership of this congregation along with input from many of our members wrote a “mission statement” to try and capture the purpose of the Washington Street Church.  After much discussion, prayer and planning it was decided that the statement which best described what we were about was this: The Washington Street church of Christ seeks to serve and share Christ.  In the years that have followed that simple statement has continued to describe us.  We have incorporated it into our publications and I have preached on its implications in many ways.  I wonder… does it still describe us?  Does it still capture our mission?

On Sunday I began a new series entitled “Mission 2020”.  We will be re-examining our mission throughout this month and looking for ways to emphasize it.  I will also be talking about ways that each of our members can be a part of this mission and how we can bring new believers to it.  We will be setting some specific goals towards that mission and what we would like for year 2020 to look like for this church.  What will be different?  What will be the same?

I recently read an article from a business magazine that talked about mission and “mission statements.”  The author had interviewed the CEOs of some of the country’s most successful corporations and had come to a startling conclusion.  Forget the “mission statement” he said… what’s your “mission question”?  Great companies must be good at asking the right questions, the article went on to state.  It’s an interesting principle and I am curious as to how it might relate to churches.  The author went on to cite four specific questions which every successful organization must answer.  The first question?

#1  Why are we here in the first place?  Every organization must be able to articulate its reason for being.  In our case, church, why are we here?  It is easy, the article states, for companies to get so involved in the business of running the company that it forgets why it is in business to start with.  If this is true for businesses, it is surely true for churches!  The Washington St church has been here on this corner of Washington Street and Franklin for many, many years… since the mid 1830’s if our understanding of history is correct.  Do we remember why?  Is there a unique purpose for us to occupy this block?  There are many more churches in the county today than there were in previous decades.  Is there still a reason for us to be here?  You see why this is such an important question to ask… and one that must be answered not only by every church, but by every subsequent generation.  Times change.  Circumstances change.  Our purpose must constantly be re-evaluated and “re-remembered”, lest we forget what it is we are here for.

Scripture gives us a profound mandate.  In the words of Jesus in Acts 1:8, “You will be my witnesses…”  Put simply, we are here to witness to the profound grace and power of Jesus Christ.  Our mission expands outward from there, but it is there that it begins.  Join us Sunday as we explore Jesus’ instruction there.  In the coming weeks I’ll bring you the next three questions that we must also consider…  stay tuned & God bless.

New Text-Messaging System! @wscoc

We are trying a new text-alert messenger system to help folks stay up-to-ate with late-breaking news.  Occasionally there is a need to get the word out and get it out quickly to as many members as possible, much like the old phone-tree system.  This system, Remind 101, allows members to "subscribe" to the Washington Street text-messaging alerts by simply texting "@wscoc" to (931) 227-4068.  When you do so, you'll be prompted to reply your name.  (It must be the name of a church member in order for it to be accepted.)  Then text alerts can be sent out from the church office at regular intervals or as needed to YOUR phone.

The whole thing is free and your phone number is NOT stored in our system and is not even visible from the church's main site.  This keeps it completely private.  The number above is also not a private phone line, but a randomly selected number used for this purpose only.

Cool, huh?  Sign up today by texting @wscoc to (931) 227-4068 and we'll see how it works for us!

problems with the web site

Church,
Apologies for the problems we are having with the church web site this week.  It has been down since Wednesday morning and is now only back up in a partial way.  New content which has been added in the last ten days is not there.  Our web service provider is working hard to restore the problem and they have been good to keep us informed of the issues they are having.  Apparently it is a problem with their server provider.  They are hopeful to have everything restored in the next 12 – 24 hours.

In the meantime, feel free to call the church office if you need any church information that would otherwise be accessed on the web site.

Thanks for your patience,
Jim

A Vision for 2013 & Beyond... from our Shepherds

Church family,

On Sunday, Dec. 30th, our Elders presented us with a challenging vision for 2013 and beyond.  Ricky Pierce, speaking on behalf of our leadership, laid before us a challenging vision of love, unity and mission.  He spoke of a few specifics that we would like to see come to fruition in the coming year including the hiring of a new Youth Minister and the addition of a Children’s director to our staff.  He spoke of our small group ministry and our work in Honduras.  In all of these things and so many more, our Elders share a vision of a “What Next?” attitude.  God has accomplished great things in and through this church in the past, and we believe He wants to continue to do great things in and through us in the years to come.

Linked below is a copy of the message Ricky shared with us.  We know many were not able to be present physically due to holiday travel or illness.  We also know that this was a message that all of us should review and continue to think on AND to pray about throughout the coming months.  Please take a moment to read it or read it again.

I so appreciate our Elders and their forward-thinking as well as their servant-spirit.  I appreciate Ricky sharing this message with us and I ask that all of us be in prayer for each of our Elders and for their leadership in the coming year.

God bless,

Jim
