Praising God!

We are praising God this hour at the news (about an hour ago) that all four -Jack, Sarah, Jimmy & Kay- are safe on US soil in Puerto Rico.  Apparently, they were air-evacuated out earlier today afterall, prior to Hurricane Jose making landfall.

We have many reasons to praise God and we are thankful for one more this afternoon!  We look forward to hearing their account when they get home.  Will keep you posted!

update on the Rabys & Daniels... Friday evening

This is the latest update we've seen from Leslie, Jack & Sarah's daughter.  Please continue to join us all in prayer over these couples and the many more who are stranded after Hurricane Irma and facing another one in the coming hours.

Update...we have heard from our parents again.
Here's what we know:
We know that the Lord is still very much at work! Over the past several hours, the Lord has continued to allow us to network with folks who have been helping us and may continue to offer even more help in the coming hours and days. We still have hope that our parents will be coming home soon.

But, we have also experienced a bit of a roller coaster of emotions in the past several hours. From the picture we're being painted by both our government and Ms. Kay [Daniel], it looks as though the evacuation of Americans will be waiting until after the passing of Hurricane Jose.

Our parents seem to be terrified of the coming storm as they have no true shelter at this time. In some of our recent communication with Ms. Kay , we learned more about the pictures she sent that were previously posted [on Facebook]. These were from their room and a room close to theirs; the room beside theirs is completely gone after Hurricane Irma. (Ms. Kay said one lady took cover under a mattress during Hurricane Irma, and the storm sucked the mattress out the window.) For Jose, the protection of walls and windows no longer exist. Please pray for protection in the palm of the Lord's hand.

We've also learned that generators have now been turned off; we assume it's in anticipation of Jose. We're expecting communication to become even more scarce between their foursome and us kids.
Finally, please simply pray for "4 empty seats."

Thank you for continuing to pray with us!

Prayers for the Rabys & the Daniels

Church,
Let me ask you to be in diligent prayer for Jack & Sarah Raby and their friends Kay & Jimmy Daniel.  As many of you know by now they are on the island of St. Marteen, where they weathered Hurricane Irma yesterday but are now faced with additional challenges.  We've been keeping in touch with their daughter, Leslie, and understand that all are okay but understandably concerned.  Much of their hotel has been damaged as has much of the country, including the airport.  Their primary concern right now is looters and lack of proper security across the island.  They are without power and communication is very difficult.  We understand that they do have food and medicines.  They are also aware that another storm, Jose, is approaching, making everything even more difficult.  Please pray for their safety, their health and for relief/rescue efforts to aid all in need, but especially for our dear friends wanting to return home as quickly as possible.

Ps 31:20-22
20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them
from the intrigues of men;
in your dwelling you keep them safe
from accusing tongues.

21 Praise be to the LORD,
for he showed his wonderful love to me
when I was in a besieged city.
22 In my alarm I said,
"I am cut off from your sight!"
Yet you heard my cry for mercy
when I called to you for help.NIV

Ps 91:1-2
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge
and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust." NIV

Young people showing the way..

I am so proud of all of our young people.  In so many ways they really show all of us “the way” of the spiritual life in the way that they serve Christ.  Last week both our Youth Group (grades 6-12) AND our Children’s Ministry (k-5) collected donations and went shopping for children in our community in need.  Their purchases are being donated to Clothe Our Kids, a local non-profit agency whose mission is to provide at-risk children and needy children with clothing and shoes.  Operating through our local school systems, Clothe Our Kids, is a way for us to fulfill the love of Christ by sharing with others and taking care of our community’s most precious citizens- our children.  This is a great ministry that is making a difference all over our area and we are proud to be a part of this great work.

I am especially proud of our young people, many of whom made contributions out of their own pockets to pay for the socks, underwear, toboggans, coats, jackets and scarfs so that other children will have warm clothes to wear as the weather turns colder.  Other donations were made by church members and in memory of sister Christine Warren, who so loved our children, hundreds of dollars were spent.   Clothe Our Kids exists on the donations from churches, individuals and businesses here locally.  If you or anyone else would like to make donations I would point you to their website at www.clotheourkids.com or on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/clotheourkids).

Clothing donations can be dropped off at:
Clothe Our Kids
200 North Main Ave
Fayetteville, TN 37334

I always love sharing good news when I hear it and here are folks doing lots of good in our community.  May God bless them and us as we endeavor to serve Him right here in Lincoln County.

Spiritual Leadership for God's people

When Israel went looking for a leader their first instinct was to look for a leader “like all the other nations.”  I suppose they thought that in finding a leader who was like all of the other leaders among the nations that the nation would get the respect that they thought they deserved.  Perhaps they were seeking a place of prominence in the world.  Perhaps they were seeking power among the nations.  Or perhaps they just wanted to have what other nations had.  Whatever the case, it did not work out well for Israel.  When God allowed his chosen nation to have their first “king”—in reality a rejection of His Lordship over the nation—they learned that having a leader like all the other nations was not all it was cracked up to be.  Saul, while seemingly possessing all of the outward qualifications one might look for in a strong leader, turned out to be a disastrous disappointment for Israel.  Even though he was strong and tall and impressive in appearance and stature, his moral character or lack thereof proved to be his own downfall.  When God then chose for Israel a new king, a young man named David, He made clear where they had gone wrong… “The LORD does not look at the things man looks at.  Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." (1 Sam 16:7 NIV)

On Sunday, January 8th, our Elders put before our church family the names of men whom they believe will be a great addition to our eldership and to our deacons.  They have asked Daniel Eldridge, Rick Patterson and J.B. Cox to serve in the role of shepherd or elder.  Additionally, they have asked Perry Gates and Brent Shockley to serve in the role of deacon.  While both roles are essentially servant-leadership roles, they have their distinctive functions within the church body and both are vitally important.  When the first-century church was considering men to serve as servant leaders among them, they recognized the importance and took care not to make the same mistake Israel made.  In Acts 6 the apostles decided to choose several men from among the church “who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom.”  They knew that not only wise men were needed.  They knew that not only strong men were needed.  They knew that these men must be full of the Spirit of God in their lives!  We have always sought to follow their example in selecting men among us who likewise are known to be “full of the Spirit and wisdom.”

Lord willing, on Sunday, January 22nd, these men will take their place as elders and as deacons tasked with leading this church family in our own walk with the Lord.  I know each of them very well, am confident of their character and am looking forward to serving alongside each of them as we all together seek to grow in Spirit and wisdom for Him.  Please be in prayer for each of these men and their families (especially their families!) and also for the other men who are currently serving us in these roles.  May God continue to bless us as we seek Him!

Thank you to bro. John Ed Underwood for his many years of service

After 42 years of faithful service to the family at Washington Street, first as a deacon and for the last 10-plus years as an elder, John Ed Underwood has chosen to step down effective December 31, 2016.

The remaining elders consider it an honor to have served with him, and have asked him to continue in his role as church treasurer. We look forward to many more years of worship and fellowship with John ED and Ms. Anne.
-- the elders

A new year... a new focus... a new style for small groups at Washington Street

For more than thirteen years Washington Street has enjoyed the blessings of small group ministry.  Our Share Groups, as they were originally conceived, have helped us build community and increase fellowship within the church family.  On so many occasions our small groups have assured that folks were taken care of when there was a need or encouraged others in the community through outreach.  I brag all the time about how my small group has encouraged me and helped me through difficult times.

I am excited about the possibilities that this new year and our new focus for the year holds for us!  Our leadership is encouraging us to look for ways to grow spiritually for Him all throughout the year.  To that end, our preaching, our Bible classes, our youth and children’s ministries are all implementing different ways to encourage this kind of growth among us.  I believe our Sunday nights are a great opportunity for us to spur on these efforts and our small groups to be great places for this kind of growth to occur!

To that end, beginning in February (as our January BREAKOUT month concludes) we will be transitioning into a new Sunday evening ministry that we are re-naming Spiritual Life Groups to help and highlight this new focus.  Once again most of these groups will meet on Sunday afternoon or evening and will be small groups of 12-15 individuals who will meet together for prayer, Bible study, fellowship and sharing life together.  Once again they will be great opportunities to invite friends and visitors to.  This year, however, we want to create a greater sense of community among all of our groups and include to a greater degree those who do not wish to be a part of a small group.  We will do this by asking every group to meet together for a brief period of devotion prior to breaking out into small groups, which will meet primarily in rooms throughout the building.  Our elders have asked us to take this approach to better accommodate visitors and to increase fellowship among our members.  Our goal is to have a greater number of small groups to choose from which would be smaller in size (12-15).  Also, instead of groups discussing the morning’s lesson (or preachin’), groups will study through different spiritual practices with new discussion guides written by our ministry staff.  This will give us all a new and unique experience on Sunday nights that will be quite different from Sunday morning’s lessons yet will still contribute to the overall theme.

After our groups ‘breakout’ into their Spiritual Life Groups, I will continue to lead a session in the auditorium (for those preferring the style of a class instead of small group) that will still be based on that day’s topic.  Please join me in praying for the growth of this new ministry as we continue to look for ways to challenge one another spiritually towards greater maturity in Christ!  A very important (but short) meeting of all small group leaders will be this Sunday evening, Jan. 15, at 6pm.

In Case of Inclement Weather...

In case of any inclement weather you are encouraged to check back to the website for any postings of possible changes to regularly scheduled activities or worship services.

You can also stay up-to-date by signing up for the church's text-messaging system through REMIND.COM by texting @wscoc to the number 81010 or check the church's Facebook page.

We will do our best to keep you informed of any schedule changes or cancellations!

In case you didn't know... if ice, sleet or snow is ever a possibility, our crew of Grant Bartelt and Ava Whitworth (and often many of our deacons) are always out doing their best to make sure that our building can be accessed easily and safely for all members.  We want everyone to be safe and cautious when getting out in dangerous weather conditions, but we also want to do everything we can to make the building accessible for worship services unless conditions absolutely prohibit.

(We do not anticipate there being any problems with this weekend's weather... BTW!)
