Caring Cooks Ministry

The Caring Cooks Ministry is in need of help!  They are currently re-organizing and soliciting new volunteers to help out with this great ministry.  There is hardly a week that goes by in our church family when one of our own isn’t in the hospital or in need of a little TLC.  The Caring Cooks are organized into teams who are called upon when a member returns home from the hospital to provide a hot meal to them for a couple of days.  It is a wonderful ministry and a great opportunity to serve!  Consider it.

Many thanks to Connie Nedeau and to Shannon Alcorn for all of their work on this!

update on Faye Barhorst

Faye remains in very serious condition at the Jewish Hospital of Louisville. Ray has asked that we pray. Doctors are hopeful today that she has made some progress and they are in the process of weaning her from some medications in hopes of being able to perform surgery and give her a type of heart pump. This will depend on whether she is strong enough or not.

Let's all pray together that her body will be strong, that she can be weaned from the medications that have improved her lung & kidney functions and that this will be successful.

Also, keep Ray in your prayers as he and their family are together, but so many miles from home.

Youth Minister Visit Weekend... round #2

Just a reminder that Paul Oakley and his wife, Brittany will be our special guests this weekend as he will be interviewing for our Youth & Children’s Ministry position.  Paul is originally from Lebanon, TN but has been working on a volunteer basis in the youth program at the Collegeside congregation in Cookeville, TN for several years.  They are looking for a full time work and will be with us all weekend.  The congregation is invited to a ‘meet-n-greet’ game night on Saturday from 6- ?pm and everyone is encouraged to come out and meet this fine, young couple.  They’ll be interviewing with the committee on Sat. morning and Paul will be teaching the youth Bible classes on Sunday morning.

Also, I’ve attached a flyer regarding the blood drive going on at the square today for anyone interested in supporting that good ministry!

Come out and meet this fine, Christian couple!  And be praying that God continue to lead us in this search.

updating the bulletin distribution list

All,

I’ve been in the process of updating our distribution list for the church bulletin, The Voice of Washington Street, since we updated our membership lists.  If you are receiving this e-mail, that means you are subscribed to receiving the bulletin via E-mail each week.

Thank you for allowing us to get this great communication to you via e-mail!  It keeps our postage down greatly and that makes us all happy.

If at any time you wish to unsubscribe, just reply back to the office or give a call in to the church office at 931.433.3291

This is a separate list from the “E-News blog” that is on our website.  If you wish to subscribe to that service, you must do so thru the blog itself.  The blog is updated more regularly throughout the week.

Thanks!

BTW- if you’ve just been added, you can get this week’s VOICE online now at http://www.washingtonstreetchurch.org/Bulletins/May%2012,%202011.pdf

--Jim

Instructions for those who are new to the e-mail distribution:

Each week you will receive an e-mail link to the actual pdf file from the church’s website.  Just click on the link and your computer should open the VOICE document.  It is a common file format, pdf.  If you cannot open the document, you should download the FREE “Adobe Acrobat Reader” from our web site.  Just go to www.washingtonstreetchurch.org  and under ‘News’ from the menu, click the “Voice.”  That will take you to the archive of the last three months of issues.  Click on the “Adobe Acrobat Reader” icon and follow the instructions to download the free reader.  Once on your computer, you should be able to read any pdf file available on the web site.

Curt transferred to the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta

I just got off the phone with Marcia and can't tell you how enthusiastic she sounded about the beginning of Curt's treatment & rehab in Atlanta. They arrived yesterday (after an eventful but successful trip) at the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Its a renowned hospital known for its great care for children, even children with injuries such as Curt's. She & David have been greatly encouraged by what they are seeing and especially the small signs of progress that they are already observing. She told me that she believes in prayer, so to keep praying! Of course we will.

Their new address is: ATTN: Curt Cannon
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta

Update on Curt Cannon

I just got back from visiting with Curt this morning and am glad to report that they are anxious to be moving to Atlanta in the morning. Curt will be taken to the Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta... known as the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta... where he will recieve the very best in care and especially in physical & occupational therapy. Marcia & David are very excited about the move!
Curt has shown many small signs of improvement in the last two weeks since I last saw him. David & Marcia continue to be encouraged not only by these signs, but also by the hundreds of prayers and acts of kindness done for theme over these last several weeks.
Continue to keep Curt in your prayers as they travel to Atlanta. Marcia is a little nervous about the trip which they'll be making by ambulance. Pray for their safety and for an easy trip for Curt. Pray that the therapists there will be able to challenge Curt to respond and heal at a steady pace and that he will continue to show signs of improvement each day.
Pray for healing and pray for strength and comfort as they will be so far from home.
They continue to be overwhelmed by all of the love shown for this little boy by so many all over our community... in fact by our entire community. We are so blessed to live where we do!

"Farewell" Dinner for the Sullivans

Church,

As I mentioned in the bulletin this week, THIS Wednesday night we are hosting a special “Farewell” dinner for Brad & Jenny.  The theme is “Texas”, so come in your most original western attire.

In addition to a great meal being planned, there will be a “Tall Texas Money Tree” growing in the Fellowship Hall to be given to the Sullivans as a parting gift.  So, come Wednesday night prepared to stick a few “blossoms” on the tree and wish Brad & Jenny well in their future ministry!

God bless,

Storm Damage & opportunities to help!

Church,

Lots going on this weekend!  As you probably already know, RCA took a major hit Wednesday morning probably from a small tornado.  Cleanup & recovery efforts are already underway.  You can find out more at http://riverside.cloudaccess.net/ and even donate to help with recovery expenses.

Several church members have been affected with trees down, and minor storm damage.  Mrs. Peggy Mitchell lost about 8 trees in her yard.  A crew is meeting at 8:30am Sat morning to help with cleanup at her house.  Come if you can and lend a hand!

I became aware last night that Tina & Sonny Balch lost their home in the storms.  They are staying at Tina’s parents, Joe & Pam Cummins’ home, but lost everything.  If you would like to help them out, you can make a donation to the church in their name (we’ll make sure they get it) OR help with clothes for the kids.  Caitlin wears 18-24 months. Colt is in 3T pants and 3-4 T shirts. Ryan I think is around a boys XL men's medium shirt and a 12 husky pant.  I understand that they did not have insurance for the contents of the home, so anything we might be able to do to help would be most appreciated.

If you would like to help by donating blood… Blood Assurance will be at the Riverside Christian Academy campus on Monday from 8:30am till 2:30pm.  Just come & donate!  Blood Assurance provides all of the blood supply for our local hospital as well as most in Chattanooga and North Georgia, including many of the areas hit hardest by the tornadoes this week.

Boy Scout Troop 357, co-led by JB Cox, is receiving donations for victims in the North Alabama area at OUR CHURCH BUILDING and at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church TODAY (Friday from 7am – 9pm) and TOMORROW (Sat from 7am -10 am).  Boxes have been setup under the portico by the Fellowship Hall for you to drop off donations.  The Troop will be here tonight for a lock-in to sort the supplies for delivery as soon as they can.  You can contact ScoutMaster Jason Bates, at 931.532.4058 for more information.  Any supplies of food, clothing, blankets, water, basic necessities, etc. would be appreciated!  Monetary donations are also accepted… make checks payable to the American Red Cross.

If there are other needs within our church family that I am unaware of, please let me know and I’ll try to get the word out!  These are opportunities that I am aware of at the present time.  There may be other opportunities to help in the days to come… be praying for our friends & family in other areas hit hardest by the storms.

God bless,

Jim

Update on Curt Cannon- Tues

I just returned from visiting with the Cannons again. They are in really good spirits today and continue to thank everyone for all the thoughts & prayers being lifted their way. They want all those prayers directed over Curt right now, but they have been overwhelmed at the outpouring of love for their whole family.

Their vigil continues at Curt's bedside. After reviewing the results from the MRI taken on Saturday and another CT scan done yesterday, they have reason to be hopeful. The doctors still cannot tell if he will get any better, but until the swelling of his brain goes down, they can't tell that he won't. That, from Marcia. So, they wait... and pray.

And they are joined by hundreds (maybe thousands) of friends and family here in Lincoln County (and around the world) whose voices are resounding up to God.

Again, they insist that they do not need a thing except our prayers. Indeed, the hospital staff and accomodations at Vanderbilt are first class and they are well taken care of.

Till we hear more to pass along... keep praying... without ceasing!

Curt will have MRI today

This from Marcia & David today... "Thank you. Please pray for good results from the MRI today. It is the first one we have had. It will tell us more about the damage and what we are up against. I am scared but have faith we will get a good report. Please forward on... Thanks" - Marcia Cannon I'm told he had a better night last night with no major problems. Continue to lift him up in prayer! -Jim

Keep Praying for Curt Cannon...

Church family,

David and Marcia have both expressed their overwhelming gratitude for the outpouring of love that has been shown for little Curt and their whole family throughout the week. They have definitely felt the love and support from this community and they are holding up well under their circumstances. David asked me to thank everyone I see because they are simply not able to thank everyone personally right now, but they so appreciate every thought, every card and especially every prayer. And they ask us to keep praying! Keep praying for little Curt.

His condition is some improved since Monday, though not as improved as they had hoped. They continue to wait and hold out hope. Yesterday (Thur) was particularly rough as some of his pressures spiked, but they are hopeful that today will be different.

I carried up the hundreds of notes written to him after our prayer service on Wednesday and Marcia was so appreciative to know that all of our young people are praying for him. Please continue to do so! In the meantime, you can join “Praying for Curt Cannon” on Facebook… and checking back to the E-News blog on the church’s website for updates. We are hopeful that there will be good news to report in the hours & days to come!

Praying for Curt

We are learning new meaning to what the Apostle Paul instructed the Christians at Thessolonica to do... "Pray without ceasing" he told hem. Our church family at Washington Street has been doing just that these last few days and we would like to ask the entire Christian community in Fayetteville to join us today in prayer for a little boy so dear to us . Curt Cannon, the 7 yr old son of David & Marcia Cannon was injured in an accident on Sunday evening, was med-flighted to Vanderbilt and remains there in very critical condition. David, Marcia, Curt and his sister, Amy Ann are dear members of our church family as are his grandparents, Curtis & Ruth Ashby. Our hearts go out to them, our thoughts are with them, and our prayers are covering them through this difficult time. They would cherish your prayers as well as they wait.

Tonight, following an abbreviated Bible class time, our church family with gather for a concentrated period of prayer.  We would love for anyone to join us around 7:30pm for this. We'll ask all of our teachers to excuse their classes at that time so that we can all gather in the auditorium to lift this precious little boy up in prayer. We would love for other churches to do the same.

God bless & thank you for your concern,

-Jim

Feel free to forward this link to anyone else you might think of who would join us in this prayer…

Curt Cannon

All throughout the night and through the day today many prayers have been lifted up for little Curt Cannon.  The 7 yr old son of David & Marcia Cannon was injured in an accident on Sunday evening, was med-flighted to Vanderbilt and remains there in very critical condition.  After visiting with the Cannons this morning and praying there with them, the family waits.  They are told the next 72 hours are critical.

A prayer meeting is being planned this afternoon at 3:30pm at Askins School and we are calling on the Christian community to keep this precious little boy in their prayers as well as his good family, David, Marcia and sister, Amy Anne.
